Save Money and Protect Your Loved Ones

My wife and I have really made very conscious efforts in our journey toward reducing the toxins and chemicals in our home and bodies.  We buy organic foods as often as possible, we have replaced many of our personal hygiene products with natural alternatives and you wouldn’t believe how much vinegar we go through now that we’ve banned harsh chemical cleaning products.  I am really thankful that we’ve done so and I am trying to inspire my family, friends and basically anyone that I can to do the same (no, not in a crazy, fanatical nuts kind of way, I just care about people).  I think I got that way after I returned from my first trip to San Francisco, California.  I was just blown away with how so many people were so conscious of their health and the environment.  It was just so inspiring and I guess I caught the bug.

Healthy Isn’t Cheap

Anyone that shares this enthusiasm knows that in some ways, it can cost a little more to live like this.  It’s a shame that it’s so much more convenient and less expensive to buy chemically processed goods and it’s harder to find wholesome, organic and safe products.  The when you do find them, they cost a premium.  The good news is that if you know where to look and educate yourself, there are a few items that allow you to make healthy choices AND save you money.

An Exception to the Rule

One of our favorites that fall into that category are Wool Dryer Balls.  The first time I heard of them, I really didn’t give any credit to them, probably because they were so simple (what could they possibly impact?).  My wife and I received a 6 pack of them as a baby shower gift and ever since then, we use them in every load and I can’t imagine my laundry room without them.  I’m hooked, I tell you!

Break It Down

I am an engineer by trade, so it seems my head is constantly in “analysis” mode.  You can read what I found out about the dangers of the traditional fabric softener dryer sheets by clicking here (which is the best reason for using wool dryer balls) but before you do, I’d like to show how my engineer brain has broken down the financial aspect.  You’ll thank me later, I promise.

After researching, I found out that the average electric dryer uses 3000 watts of electricity and the average cost of electricity in the U.S. in 2015 was 12.73 cents per kilowatt.  Using this information, I calculated that if I do 4 loads of laundry a week, I will spend $122 per year in electric cost.  Wool Dryer Balls are advertised to reduce the amount of time required to dry your clothes.  I measured the amount of time it takes to dry my clothes with and without dryer balls.  The time was reduced by 30% with dryer balls (they actually work!).  This means I’m saving $36.60 per year by using non-toxic dryer balls instead of my old chemical laced dryer sheets.  I’ll save twice the value of the dryer balls.  Not too shabby!

Now, how much money am I saving by not buying dryer sheets?  Well, dryer balls last for around 2000 loads.  I found the average cost to be $.05 per dryer sheet and Dryer Balls are generally less than $20.  This means I will save $80 by using the dryer balls instead of buying dryer sheets.

All of that adds up to a total saving of $431.92 over the course of the 2000 cycles.  Now that I’ve learned how much money I saved, I’m super thrilled that I chose this method to dry my clothes and eliminate chemicals from my dryer cycle forever.  Another advantage is that my clothes are in the dryer for less time and that means they should last longer.  One more side note, I have my  personal dryer in my home, but if I did my laundry at a laundry mat, I would be ecstatic if I was able to reduce the amount of time that I’m waiting for the dryer by 30%.

My dryer balls are one of my favorite new “chemical free hacks”.  I just love them!!  I’ve done plenty of research into the different styles and the ones that I recommend are Pure Homemaker Wool Dryer Balls and if you want to learn more CLICK HERE.

As you can tell, I like to do my research.  I am now more convinced than ever that I made a smart decision for my health and wallet when I began using my Pure Homemaker Wool Dryer Balls.  If you would like a set for yourself, click here.
